Named after President Andrew Jackson, the county was established in 1852 from the southwestern part of Lane County and the unorganized area south of Douglas and Umpqua Counties. The largest city in the county, Medford, is home to over 87,000 people and serves as the county seat. Medford is also a popular place for people to visit who want to go to the nearby parks.

It is five miles west of Medford and on the National Historic Registry.
